Summer Camp at Southport [Photo Gallery]

July 2005

Background Info to Camp:

At Camp each year we raise money for BB and GB activities throughout the world. Recently two members from our congregation, Mr. and Mrs. William and Lorna Rea, were going to visit some relatives, who are missionary's in Nigeria. We sent with them, over £600 which we raised at this years camp. Below are just a few photographs from a very grateful Nigerian BB company.

We hope to include more information from Nigeria in the near future

CAMP 2005

Below we have two accounts from camp 2005, the first from a first year lad, and the second from a seasoned camper.

CAMP REPORT 2005 by Gordon Taggart (Age 12)

Camp 2005 was an amazing holiday! It’s no normal holiday. It’s a holiday with your friends and you sleep in tents with all ages. This was my fourth camp, and it was my first time in the advance party. The advance party was great; first we put up the marquee and began to start to put up all the other tents. It was hard work but it paid off, because on Friday we had a gorgeous fry!

The main party arrives and they all settle in. Then we have dinner. And the food is great! Thanks to the cooks! Then we have our first activity, a Theme Park! After the Theme Park we all get tired and we have supper. Before supper we have a Quiz. The quiz winners win points for their tent and at the end of camp the points all add up and the winning tent win the Trophy and a fiver each! The points aren’t just the quiz points. In the morning after breakfast, we have tent inspections. The cleanest tent gets more points.

The highlights of camp were The Army Base Visit and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The Army Base was class; they showed us all the weapons, all of the base and the biggest playstation we have ever played on. It was a shooting game with real machine guns instead of a controller!!

In Blackpool Pleasure Beach we went on the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Europe! AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Overall camp was amazing and I will offer it to anybody who wants to go. It is an exciting time with your friends and a time to make new ones. Camp was class!!

An account of Camp from a seasoned camper

Once again camp was brilliant! It is quite easily the best holiday you could ever have, you’re with your friends and never have a reason to say you’re bored, how can you not enjoy that. Camp really is a quality experience. For all the old timers like me we know what to expect but we were all first timers once and as soon as you arrive on the campsite you fit in straight away and for those 12 days have an incredible time. All at camp feel at ease around each other and nobody feels left out and the boys and girls always know they have people to talk to in their officers.

Southport 2005, where do you start? Well we all said a couple of years ago that we would never experience weather like that again at camp after a blistering time back then, but as the old tale goes never say never. Camp will definitely be remembered for the glorious sunshine we had this year (Plenty of slip slap slop).

At camp the boys, girls and officers all have the opportunity to participate in many different activities. The ‘Troopers’ had a day at Blackpool at the Sandcastle Centre (weekly wash for some) and the famous pleasure beach. There was an adventure day out on the lake and ropes courses.

The main day out at camp 2005 was our visit to 1st Battalion Royal Green Jackets at Weeton Barracks. This was a thoroughly enjoyable day out doing many things from actually partaking in army exercises to learning about the army, what they do and their equipment. There never is a time to say ‘I’m Bored’ at camp as there is always something to do.

A big part to play at camp is camp devotions, morning and evening plus your usual tent prayers at bed time. Captain Taggart led the devotions entitled “This is your life”. Selected other officers took evening prayers to recap on what the captain said that morning but also left the campers with a thought in their head to help the message sink in. There was also some sketches and drama to help put the point across. Camp is all about trying to teach the boys and girls about God and help them develop their relationship with him and that is why this part of camp is very important.

Well that was camp for 2005. Once again, for me anyway, it never grows old. Another unforgettable time and I personally couldn't recommend a better holiday. I have never heard of any one person who only attended one camp, so if it brings people back year after year there must be something about it. Only one thing left for me to do, Camp in 2006 Captain?

Lieutenant Darren McMillan

P.S. Thanks again to Mrs. T and Mrs. H, once again the food at camp was exceptional. That Michelin Star must be on its way by now.

We had the honour this year of having a visit from the Brigade secretary Mr Steve Dickinson. He also joined in the sports and other camp activities.
