Summer Camp at Southport [Photo Gallery]

July 2007

Here we go again, another year and yet another successful summer camp. Once again our company set off for the usual camp site at Bankfield Lane Southport. As a member of the advanced party we set off on the 4th July 2007 to Bankfield Lane, Churchtown, Southport.

On arrival, our first priority was the putting up of the marquee, three five man tents and a tent for the officers. We achieved this task successfully and settled in with a good and very welcome portion of fish and chips.

Three days later, after all the preparation had been completed, the rest of the party arrived. They settled in by putting up their beds and sorting out their suitcases for the days ahead. This is when the party really got started and everyone got on really well together.

Our camp was highlighted by the activities organised by our Captain Mr. G. Taggart. Such activities included trips to Splash World, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and the local Fire and Police services. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is home to Europe’s tallest and fastest roller coaster called the Pepsi Max. I had the pleasure of going on this ride several times and I can honestly say that it is a truly exhilarating experience and certainly not to be missed when visiting Blackpool. These were only a few of the trips but I feel they were among the best and certainly the most memorable.

On Sunday we attended Liverpool Road Methodist Church service and were treated to orange for the lads and tea & coffee for the officers after the service. Later in the week we played a football match against the 7th Southport BB Company - but unfortunately we lost. Our camp appeal for this year raised £340.00 which will go towards the Boys Brigade in Cameroon.

Another personal favourite memory from this year’s camp was the delicious food prepared by Mrs. S. Taggart and Mrs. L. Harte. Before receiving these culinary delights however, we had to take part in a selection of quizzes. This gave us the chance to win reward points for our tent; the tent with the most points at the end of camp winning a prize and trophy. Unfortunately it was not my tent that won the trophy....perhaps next year.

Towards the end of camp we were flooded by the heavy rains that swept across the UK and we were forced to stay in a local church hall for a couple of nights. Despite this, it did not affect our high hopes for next year’s camp, and I would encourage all members of the company to attend as it is a very memorable and rewarding experience.

A very special thanks to the Captain and his staff for another successful camp and I'm sure everyone is looking forward to future camps.

PS Mrs T & Mrs Harte Thanks!
